Remember to always refer to the official NMC website (www.nmc.org.uk) for the definitive information regarding the Test of Competence.

Part 1: Computer Based Test (CBT)

  • Nature of the Test: The CBT is a computer-based, multiple-choice examination that assesses your theoretical knowledge and understanding across a range of nursing or midwifery topics. It can be taken at Pearson VUE test centers worldwide.
  • Structure: The CBT is divided into two parts:
    • Part A (Numeracy): This section assesses your ability to perform calculations related to nursing or midwifery practice, such as drug calculations and fluid balance. It typically consists of around 15 short-answer questions requiring a numerical answer and has a time limit of 30 minutes.
    • Part B (Clinical): This section comprises around 100 multiple-choice questions that test your clinical knowledge and application to specific fields of nursing (adult, child, mental health, learning disabilities) or midwifery. You have 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete this part.
  • Scoring: You will receive a pass or fail result for each part independently. To pass the overall CBT, you must pass both Part A and Part B.
  • Resits: If you fail one or both parts, you have a maximum of three attempts within one year from your initial application. There is a minimum of 10 days between each attempt. If you fail after three attempts, you will need to wait six months before reapplying and retaking both parts.
  • Preparation: The NMC provides information booklets and blueprints outlining the content covered in the CBT for different fields of nursing and midwifery. Pearson VUE also offers practice tests on their website to help you familiarize yourself with the format and style of questions. It’s crucial to review the NMC Code of Professional Conduct as it underpins all aspects of the test.

Part 2: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

  • Nature of the Test: The OSCE is a practical assessment that evaluates your clinical skills and ability to apply knowledge in simulated scenarios. It is currently held at five approved test centers in the UK.
  • Structure: The OSCE consists of 10 stations, each designed to assess different aspects of nursing or midwifery practice. These stations typically include:
    • Four APIE stations: These linked stations focus on the nursing/midwifery process: Assessment, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation of care for a specific patient scenario.
    • Four skills-based stations: These stations assess your practical skills, which may include areas like medication administration (e.g., inhaled medication, injections, suppositories, insulin pens), wound care, basic life support, blood glucose monitoring, catheterization, communication, and more. The specific skills tested can change, so it’s important to stay updated with the NMC guidelines.
    • Two silent stations: These stations assess your professional values and behaviors, and evidence-based practice through written tasks or scenarios.
  • Viva: In some cases, if a candidate performs well but misses one element of the marking criteria in a station, a “Viva” (verbal rectification) might be offered at the end of the station to allow them to demonstrate their knowledge. This is only applicable on the first attempt.
  • Assessment: You will be assessed against specific marking criteria for each station, focusing on your clinical competence, communication, professionalism, and decision-making.
  • Resits: If you do not pass all stations, you will need to resit only the stations you failed. The resit fee is typically lower if you need to resit seven or fewer stations. All resits must be taken at the same test center as your first attempt. You have a maximum of three attempts at the OSCE within your application period, with at least 10 days between each sitting. Failing the third attempt will result in your application closing, and you will need to wait six months before starting a new application.
  • Preparation: The NMC provides information booklets and preparation materials for the OSCE, including mock scenarios and station timings. It is highly recommended to practice clinical skills in a simulated environment, familiarize yourself with the APIE framework (or AIE for Nursing Associates), understand the marking criteria, and practice time management for each station. Some organizations offer training programs and mock OSCEs to help candidates prepare.

Key Points to Remember:

  • The NMC website (www.nmc.org.uk) is the primary source of information regarding the Test of Competence, including the latest guidelines, blueprints, information booklets, and approved test centers.
  • The Test of Competence is based on current UK pre-registration standards and the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • It’s essential to use up-to-date resources and align your preparation with the latest NMC guidelines and marking criteria.

What is Computer Based Test (CBT)?
The Computer Based Test (CBT) is the first part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) Test of Competence for nurses and midwives who have trained outside of the UK and wish to register to practice in the UK.

Here's a breakdown of what it entails:

Purpose: The CBT assesses your essential professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for safe and effective nursing or midwifery practice in the UK. It ensures that you meet the current pre-registration education standards.
Format: It's a computer-based exam taken at a Pearson VUE test center, which has locations in many countries worldwide.
Structure: The CBT is divided into two parts, which are taken in one sitting but are assessed independently:
Part A: Numeracy: This section tests your ability to perform calculations relevant to nursing or midwifery practice, such as drug dosages, IV rates, and fluid balance. It consists of 15 short-answer questions, and you have 30 minutes to complete it.
Part B: Clinical Questions: This section assesses your theoretical clinical knowledge and understanding of nursing or midwifery practice. It comprises 100 multiple-choice questions, and you have 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete it.
Assessment: Each question in Part B is scored as either correct or incorrect. For Part A (Numeracy), you need to provide a numerical answer. There is no partial credit.
Passing Score: You need to achieve a specific pass mark in both Part A and Part B to pass the overall CBT. The pass marks can vary slightly but are generally around 60-70% for Part B and require a certain number of correct answers (e.g., 7 out of 15) for Part A.
Attempts: You have a limited number of attempts (usually three) to pass the CBT as part of your application. If you fail, you typically need to wait a certain period before you can retake it.
Relevance to UK Practice: The questions are designed to reflect UK healthcare standards, policies, and best practices.

In essence, the NMC CBT is a crucial step for internationally trained nurses and midwives to demonstrate that they possess the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to practice safely and effectively within the UK healthcare system.
What topics will be covered in the CBT course?
The course typically covers foundational CBT principles, including the cognitive model, behavioural techniques, assessment methods, formulation, and application to various mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and stress. A detailed syllabus can be found in the "Course Content" section.
What is the learning format of the CBT course?
Online, live webinars, blended learning.
How long does the CBT course take to complete?
3 weeks
What kind of support will I receive during the CBT course?
Tutor's support via online forums, scheduled Q&A sessions, email,. Details about the level and type of support offered will be provided in the Student Support section.
Are there any practical elements or placements involved in the CBT course?
For the NMC CBT preparation course offered by UK Degrees Ltd, the focus is primarily on equipping you with the theoretical knowledge and understanding necessary to successfully pass the NMC's Computer Based Test. Therefore, this specific preparation course does not typically involve practical clinical placements or hands-on client work.

The learning is delivered through online modules, potentially including simulated scenarios and case studies to illustrate CBT principles and their application. The assessment, as previously discussed, focuses on evaluating your comprehension of these theoretical concepts and your ability to apply them in a written format, mirroring the style of the NMC CBT exam.

If you are interested in developing practical CBT skills for therapeutic practice, you would typically need to pursue more in-depth training programs, such as postgraduate diplomas or master's degrees in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. These longer-term programs usually include supervised clinical placements as a core component.

In summary, our NMC CBT preparation course is designed to help you pass the computer-based test required for NMC registration and for practical placements, contact: admissions@ukdegrees.uk.(Terms and Conditions apply) If you have further questions about the course content or structure, please don't hesitate to ask.
